The results are now flowing in, and there are three things that may help PDP secure the office of the governor for their party member, Godwin Obaseki.
- The Incumbent Governor is a member of the People’s Democratic Party.
It should be noted that Godwin Obaseki was formerly a member of the All Progressive Congress before the clash between himself and the former governor of Edo State, Adams oshiomhole. The party was ready to deny him the opportunity of going for a second tenure and that was what pushed him to joining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in an attempt to secure his chance of running for the office again. The People’s Democratic Party understood it was a plus for them and had to bend their rules to win the state for the party. As it is now, the PDP see this as an opportunity to win an additional state and are doing everything possible to ensure that.
Also, Godwin Obaseki who is the incumbent governor has earned himself some polpularity amongst the people. He has done so many things for many communities in the state and those communities will see this as an opportunity to pay him back and show their loyalty to his government.
- Most of the Edo People Do Not Want a Godfather
It is not new that Nigerians don’t like godfatherism. But the All Progressive Congress could not hide the fact that they were bringing godfatherisim into play in the state as Desmond Elliot said it publicly that there was nothing wrong with godfatherisim. This is a mistake on the path of the APC and a plus to the PDP who seized the opportunity to inculcate it in their campaigns
- PDP had the Highest Number of Votes in Edo State During the 2019 Election
During the 2019 presidential election, where PDP lost to APC, PDP was able to gather the highest votes in Edo State. While APC pulled a total number of 267,842 votes, PDP was able to pull 275,691. This may be a sign that the Edo people prefer the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Party (APC).
